Herts Pride 2015 offers STI Testing

Herts Aid and Sexual Health Hertfordshire are teaming up to offer STI testing at Herts Pride

Herts Aid and Sexual Health Hertfordshire are working together to offer testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) at Herts Pride this year. Herts Pride is taking place from 11am on Saturday 22nd of August in Cassiobury Park, Watford.

The team will be offering screening for HIV, gonorrhoea and chlamydia in private rooms within the Wellbeing Marquee between 11am and 6pm. Anyone attending can come along and request a test for one or all of the infections. Alternatively if anyone has any questions or concerns about sexual health, they can drop in for a chat.

Suzanne Bannister, Director of Herts Aid said: “STIs don’t always show symptoms, so unless you’ve been tested it’s difficult to know for sure if you’ve picked something up. Some people live with HIV for years before they’re diagnosed. If you’re going to Herts Pride this year why not take ten minutes out of your day to get tested. With all STIs the sooner you know you have one the better, so you can get the treatment you need.

We hope that offering STI screening at Herts Pride might encourage people who wouldn’t normally think of testing to do so. It’s quick, relatively painless – a finger prick at worst – and you don’t need an appointment, just turn up on the day and we’ll explain the process.”

The tests for chlamydia and gonorrhoea require a urine sample and /or self-taken swabs which will be sent off for testing. Results are normally available within a week via text or phone call.

HIV screening will be done using a finger prick test that gives a result in just a few minutes. If HIV antibodies are detected, a follow up test at a sexual health clinic will be needed to confirm the result. The individual will also be given information on HIV and support to adjust to their diagnosis.

STI testing is already available in a number of venues across Hertfordshire. You can contact Sexual Health Hertfordshire on 0300 0085522 or visit their website on www. sexualhealthhertfordshire.clch.nhs.uk
